Science in motion : what postcolonial science studies

چکیده
One of the greatest contributions of Science and Technology Studies (STS), in the last 30 years, has been to show that the contours of science/technology and society are inextricably interwoven (Bloor [1976] 1991, Latour & Woolgar [1979] 1986; Knorr Cetina 1981; Shapin & Schaffer 1985; Latour 1987; Haraway 1991). These studies have highlighted that techno-scientific developments are path-dependent; that is embedded within particular historical and socio-economic and technical enfoldings. They have consistently shown that the concrete environment in which techno-scientific research is conducted gets embodied in the design and Abstract In the last 30 years, Science and Technology Studies (STS) have deconstructed the foundation of diffusion models of science, by showing that science and society are inextricably linked. Nevertheless, STS has rarely ventured into cross-cultural trans-national analyses of techno-scientific research. In recent times postcolonial science studies has attempted to shift the STS to trans-national domain, particularly in relation to impact of colonialism. This paper is in line with these efforts at analyzing techno-scientific research. I have analyzed Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) research and development in the United States, India, and the United Kingdom in order to put into broad relief the hierarchical global topography of techno-science. I have shown how colonialism continues to undergird analyses of techno-scientific research. I have argued that in the first instance we need a ‘decolonization of imagination’ if we need to move beyond dualist categories of west/non-west, developed/developing, north/south, and so on, which are parasitic to some conception of ‘lack’ of the non-west.

The authors suggest that postcolonial science studies can do more than expand answers to questions already posed; it can generate different questions and different ways of looking at the world. To illustrate, the authors draw on existing histories and anthropologies and critical theories of colonial and postcolonial technoscience. To move forward together, rather than remaining mired in regretf...

What distinguishes postcolonial approaches to translation is that they examine intercultural encounters in contexts marked by unequal power relations. Herein lie their strengths as well as their weaknesses. Their major contribution has been to illuminate the role of power in the production and reception of translation. But it is not certain that the postcolonial framework can be applied to othe...
متن کاملNehruvian science and postcolonial India.
This essay uses the seminal figure of Jawaharlal Nehru to interrogate the nature and representation of science in modern India. The problem posed by Nehruvian science--the conflict between (yet simultaneity of) science as both universal phenomenon and local effect--lies at the heart of current debates about what science means for the non-West. The problematic of Nehruvian science can be accesse...

For many historians the term “colonial science” implicitly refers to any scientific knowledge produced in the colonies, usually by professionals trained in the metropole. Other historians eager to “provincialize Europe” have highlighted the role that colonial administrators played in creating new forms of scientific knowledge, which then returned to Europe; still other scholars have explored ho...
متن کاملDecolonizing Trauma Theory: Retrospect and Prospects
Decolonizing trauma theory has been a major project in postcolonial literary scholarship ever since its first sustained engagements with trauma theory. Since then, trauma theory and postcolonial literary studies have been uneasy bedfellows, and the time has now come to take stock of what remains in postcolonial trauma studies from the original formulations of trauma theory, and see which furthe...
